NYC: One of the strangest things that has ever happened to me while on vacation.

I mentioned in my last post that one of the things I will remember most from my first trip to New York City, was my run-in with the New York City Police Department. Eight years later this is still one of the strangest things that has ever happened to me, although causing a pickpocket to get his get his teeth knocked out while visiting South America comes in as a close second...another story, another day.
My roommate and I stayed in the New York Inn, which is within walking distance from Times Square. We had an uneventful first evening of sightseeing and went to bed that night with plans for an exciting day the next morning. Exciting is exactly what we got. Literally within seconds of opening my eyes the next morning, we were alarmed by pounding on our hotel room door and the announcement, "NYPD, OPEN UP!" Several officers rushed into the room and escorted us out into the hallway, without even a moment to grab our stuff. We were backpacking on this trip, and wanted to travel as lightly as possible, so my pajamas were a pair of spandex pants that doubled as layering to keep warm during the day. And so, I was kicked out of my hotel room wearing spandex leggings (in the fashion world that is 2015 this is no big deal, but leggings weren't so common back then)and left to wait while the NYPD tried to talk a man out of jumping. This man was standing literally right outside the window that my bed was up against. For a few minutes we could hear them NYPD trying to talk him down by saying things like "Come on man, you don't want to jump, etc. etc." Thankfully they were successful. We were eventually allowed to go back to our room, which they had trash. And that is how I kicked off my first morning in New York. In the words of Taylor Swift's new song, "Welcome to New York," or "You Nork" (as my five-year-old pronounces it).  The incident even made the New York Post for the day.
